While aerospace (still in relatively low volumes) appears to be outpacing other sectors in its adoption of 3D metal printing – most notably NASA has stated it intends to 3D print more than 80% of future rocket engines in metal – the biomedical and mobility industries are also making significant investments in the technology. “As part of its commitment to additive manufacturing, in 2018 Burloak announced plans to create its own Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Oakville, Ontario. Expected to cost $104 million, this facility is scheduled to reach full production capacity in the third quarter of 2019. One of the machines included in this center is a Sciaky EBAM 110, which operates a build volume of 106 x 47 x 63 inches.”
EBAM system delivers production boost
“Burloak Technologies is taking delivery of an EBAM 110 system from Sciaky Inc. in July 2019 that will allow the additive manufacturing specialist in Dundas, Ont. to produce large-scale titanium structural parts in days.
“Using traditional subtractive processes, such as forging and machining, the production of titanium parts of this size could take one year while generating a significant amount of waste,” said Peter Adams, co-founder and president of Burloak Technologies.”
