Sciaky’s cutting-edge Additive Manufacturing solution promoted at Penn State University’s Technology Showcase on Additive Manufacturing
January 14, 2013
Chicago, Illinois – Sciaky, Inc., a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries (PSI) and additive manufacturing pioneer, announced today that its groundbreaking Additive Manufacturing (DM) solution was featured at Pennsylvania State University’s (PSU’s) Technology Showcase on Additive Manufacturing. The event, which was sponsored by the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), the Open Manufacturing Program of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and the Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D), took place January 8-9, 2013 at the Penn Stater Conference Center and the CIMP-3D facility, both located on the campus of PSU. The event included informative sessions on the latest breakthroughs in additive manufacturing, laboratory tours and demonstrations, as well as a networking reception.
Sciaky’s DM solution, which is based on additive manufacturing principles, is one of the key technologies being utilized at PSU’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) for the purpose of producing high quality metallic components designed for critical applications. Sciaky’s DM is the only large-scale, fully-programmable means of achieving near-net shape parts made of titanium, tantalum, inconel and other high-value metals. The solution combines computer-aided design (CAD), Sciaky’s state-of-the art electron beam welding technology and layer-additive processing. Parts manufactured with this process can range up to 19 feet in length, 4 feet in width and 4 feet high (19’x4’x4’), while deposition rates typically range from 7 to 20 pounds per hour.
“Sciaky is proud of its ongoing partnership with the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University,” said Mike Riesen, General Manager of Sciaky, Inc. “Together, we support the goal of advancing the adoption of additive manufacturing within the industrial base.”
Sciaky’s DM is also involved in other advanced research and development initiatives with the Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin. For more information, visit http://sciaky.com/additive_manufacturing.html.
